Steel used to rule the automotive world. Now, aluminum is taking over. The shift happened for good reasons. Aluminum is lighter. It is stronger per pound. It resists rust better. It handles heat differently. And surprisingly, in many manufacturing contexts, it costs less than steel.
You see this material everywhere. Even under the hood of a standard sedan. Look at the valve cover. That silver lid sitting on top of your engine block is almost certainly aluminum. It protects the valves. It holds the oil in the upper engine.
But it gets dirty.
A rubber gasket seals the cover to the block. It keeps oil from leaking out. Sometimes, though, that seal fails. Or it just gets gunky over time. Oil seeps out. It mixes with road dust. It bakes onto the metal. You get that ugly, uneven “blob effect” on the surface.
It looks bad. It feels worse.
You don’t need to replace the part. You just need to polish it. You can clean the valve cover in place or take it off. If it’s easy to reach, leave it attached. If it’s buried deep, pull the bolts and set it on the ground.

The Cleaning Process
First, shut the engine off. Let it cool down completely. Hot aluminum reacts differently to chemicals. You don’t want thermal shock or burns.
Remove the dirt first. If the cover is still on the engine, wipe it with a wet rag. If you pulled it off, hose it down. Get the loose mud and street grime away. You don’t want to grind that into the metal later.
Now, tackle the baked-on gunk. Use steel wool. Medium grade works best. Scrub the entire surface. If the wool isn’t biting hard enough, switch to a steel brush. Be careful. Aluminum is soft. You can scratch it if you are too aggressive. You want to remove the oxidation, not gouge the metal.
Next, apply a heavy-duty degreaser. Coat the top of the cover. Let it sit.
Give it thirty minutes.
This is the most important part. The degreaser needs time to break down the oil and grease bonds. If you scrub immediately, you’re just moving the dirt around. Let the chemistry work.
After thirty minutes, scrub again. Use the steel wool or brush. The grime should lift off much easier now. You are removing the residue left by the degreaser as well.
Rinse it thoroughly. Water is your friend here. If you see spots, repeat the degrease and scrub cycle. Do not rush this. A dirty surface will never polish correctly.
Dry it off with a clean, dry cloth. Microfiber is ideal. You need a matte, clean surface before you move to the final polish.
Why This Matters
Aluminum oxidizes. It turns gray and dull. Polishing doesn’t just make it shine. It removes that oxidized layer. It exposes fresh metal underneath.
