BMW is already preparing a substantial update for its M5 Touring model, despite the current generation only launching in 2024. Spy shots confirm a redesign focused on exterior styling and interior technology, slated for release around 2027 alongside broader updates to the 5 Series lineup. This move signals BMW’s commitment to rapidly evolving its performance vehicles.
Exterior Overhaul: Neue Klasse Influence
The most visible changes will center on the front end, adopting the “Neue Klasse” design language previewed in the new iX3. Expect wider, glossy headlight casings integrating radar and sensors. Whether the M5 will feature illuminated kidney grilles like some SUV models or a cleaner look remains unclear, but both are possible given BMW’s experimentation.
A larger, more aggressive air intake will feed the revised plug-in hybrid powertrain, which currently delivers a combined 716 horsepower. The updated system will likely shift more power to the electric motor and reduce reliance on the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. The car will retain its all-wheel-drive system and eight-speed ZF transmission.
Interior Revolution: Panoramic iDrive
The biggest shift will occur inside, where the M5 Touring will integrate BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, first seen in the iX3. This means a large central touchscreen, simplified controls, and a departure from the current model’s dual-screen layout. Further changes to the center console and gear selector are possible but unconfirmed.
The black band on the windscreen confirms the integration of this new system, suggesting BMW is pushing a full-scale overhaul to its interior design.
Performance Estate Era
With rivals like Audi preparing their own high-performance plug-in hybrid estates, BMW’s quick turnaround on the M5 Touring underscores the growing demand for ultra-fast, electrified wagons. The update ensures the M5 remains competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
The forthcoming M5 update will define the direction of BMW’s performance cars, blending power, technology, and a new design ethos.
