The Geely EX2 electric vehicle (EV) has emerged as China’s best-selling new car in 2025, with an impressive 465,775 units delivered in its first full year of sales. This milestone underscores China’s dominance in global automotive sales, where the market recorded 34.4 million new vehicle sales – exceeding the US market by over double. The EX2, a compact rear-wheel drive EV comparable to models like the BYD Dolphin and MG 4, is slated for release in Australia between July and December 2026.
Global Impact and Australian Expansion
The EX2’s success positions Geely as a major player in the rapidly expanding EV sector. The model will join Geely’s existing Australian lineup, which includes the EX5 EV and Starray EM-I plug-in hybrid SUV, all based on the same Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA). This launch marks the first of six new Geely models planned for the Australian market by 2028, signaling a significant expansion strategy.
Sales Comparison: China vs. Australia
The scale of the Chinese market dwarfs that of Australia: while the EX2 alone sold over 50,000 units in a single month, the Ford Ranger topped Australian sales in 2025 with just 56,555 deliveries. Australia’s total vehicle sales reached a record 1.2 million, but still fell far short of China’s figures. This disparity highlights the growing importance of the Chinese market in global automotive trends.
Technical Specifications and Pricing
The EX2 offers two battery options: a 30.12kWh LFP battery with a claimed 310km (CLTC) range, and a larger 40.16kWh battery providing a 410km (CLTC) range. Power outputs range from 58kW/310Nm to 85kW/150Nm. In China, the EX2 is priced from ¥68,800 ($A14,045), undercutting both the MG 4 and the Dolphin. Geely is expected to position the EX2 in the $20,000-$30,000 price bracket in Australia, potentially making it a competitive option in the EV market.
Geely’s Growth in Australia
Geely experienced strong growth in Australia, selling 5,010 vehicles in 2025, surpassing brands like Skoda, Renault, KGM, Omoda Jaecoo, and Cupra. The launch of the EX5 and Starray EM-I further bolstered sales, demonstrating the brand’s increasing presence in the local market.
The EX2’s success in China signifies a broader shift toward affordable, high-volume EV production. Its upcoming launch in Australia will likely challenge existing EV competitors, particularly in the budget-friendly segment.
