Geely, the Chinese automotive manufacturer, is preparing to introduce a flagship electric saloon to the UK market, potentially as early as next year. The model, currently known as the Galaxy E8 in China, is intended to elevate brand recognition and compete with established luxury EVs like the BMW i5 and Audi A6 e-tron.
Geely’s UK Expansion Strategy
Geely has ambitious goals to surpass Toyota and Vauxhall in UK sales by the end of the decade. This new saloon is part of a broader model offensive, including a rugged off-road 4×4 (codenamed KO11) slated for 2028, targeting Land Rover Defender buyers. The Galaxy E8 is expected to be positioned as a “halo product” for the brand, similar to how the Galaxy E5 was rebranded as the EX5 in the UK.
Performance and Specifications
The Galaxy E8 boasts impressive specifications. It measures over five metres long and features a drag coefficient of just 0.19—even lower than the Mercedes EQS, currently the most aerodynamic EV on sale in the UK. The vehicle will be built on the PMA2+ platform, shared with the Smart #5 SUV and Zeekr 007 saloon.
The saloon will be available with two battery options: a 62kWh LFP pack offering up to 341 miles of range (CLTC standard) or a larger 76kWh LFP unit providing up to 385 miles in dual-motor configuration. The dual-motor variant delivers up to 636bhp, enabling a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds.
Interior and Pricing
Inside, the Galaxy E8 features a massive 45-inch screen spanning the entire dashboard, eclipsing even Mercedes’ Hyperscreen in size. The starting price in China is around £20,000, but UK pricing is expected to be significantly higher when the model arrives next year.
Geely’s Broader Lineup
Geely also plans to launch a new small SUV with plug-in hybrid and pure-electric options in 2027, alongside a large plug-in hybrid SUV in 2028. The company’s best-selling model in China, the EX2, will be available in the UK starting this summer, likely priced around £20,000.
Geely’s aggressive expansion into the UK market suggests a growing competition within the EV segment, with Chinese manufacturers aiming to challenge established European and Japanese brands. The introduction of a high-performance electric saloon will test Geely’s ability to gain traction among UK buyers.
