Great Wall Motor (GWM) Chairman Wei Jianjun has released a teaser for an upcoming luxury SUV, heavily hinting at a high-performance variant of the Tank 700. The vehicle, currently unnamed, features GWM’s advanced Hi4-Z power-split hybrid technology and incorporates Kirin cultural branding – a significant step towards positioning the brand as a premium competitor in the Chinese market.
Key Specs and Tech
The teaser confirms a squared-off, body-on-frame design consistent with the Tank 700 platform. Equipped with Watchtower-style LiDAR for advanced driver assistance, the SUV boasts impressive powertrain specifications as revealed in recent MIIT filings:
- Powertrain: 2.0-liter turbocharged engine (185 kW) paired with dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 715 kW.
- Battery: 59.05 kWh ternary (NCM) lithium battery from SVOLT, providing a CLTC-rated electric range of 190 km.
- Charging: DC fast charging up to 163 kW, achieving a 30-80% charge in approximately 15 minutes.
- Dimensions: 5105 mm long with a 3000 mm wheelbase.
- Fuel Consumption: 8.45 L/100km (homologated).
These specifications place the new model above the existing Tank 700 Hi4-T in terms of both performance and luxury. The Hi4-Z’s decoupled four-wheel-drive system, replacing traditional mechanical linkages with a high-output rear e-axle, enhances efficiency and responsiveness.
Competitive Landscape
The GWM flagship aims to compete directly with the Aito M9, which recorded over 31,000 retail registrations in January and offers a 52 kWh battery with 365 kW of power. The Tank 700 Hi4-Z’s higher power output and longer electric range position it as a strong contender in the premium new energy SUV segment.
Additional Filing: Wey V9X Luxury SUV
GWM also recently filed the Wey V9X with MIIT. This six-seat luxury SUV, measuring 5299 mm long with a 3150 mm wheelbase, will be the first vehicle to utilize GWM One, the company’s new automotive platform. It offers two battery options:
- 53.6 kWh: 240 km CLTC range
- 77.7 kWh: 363 km CLTC range
The V9X includes a roof-mounted LiDAR unit and a towing capacity of 2,000 kg. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.20 L/100km for the higher-capacity variant.
The launch of these models underscores GWM’s aggressive push into the luxury hybrid SUV market, leveraging advanced technology and competitive specifications to challenge established players.
The new flagship SUV and the Wey V9X represent a significant expansion of GWM’s premium vehicle offerings, signaling a broader strategy to compete in the rapidly evolving Chinese automotive landscape.
