The Volkswagen ID. Buzz experienced a strong 2025, with global sales doubling to 60,700 units – a 102% increase compared to the previous year. This growth occurred even as the electric van faced headwinds in the U.S. market, where it will skip the 2026 model year before returning in 2027.
Global Demand Driven by Cargo Version
Demand for the ID. Buzz was almost evenly split between passenger and commercial use, with the Cargo variant accounting for 46% of all deliveries. Volkswagen plans to capitalize on this demand by introducing a long-wheelbase version of the Cargo model later in the year, which could further boost sales among fleet buyers. The U.S. market currently only receives the passenger version, and does not have access to the standard wheelbase option.
U.S. Sales Misleading, But Improving
While the ID. Buzz only went on sale in North America towards the end of 2024, deliveries in the U.S. spiked by 461.5% to 7,300 units. This figure is inflated because of the late launch date; however, it still indicates growing interest in the retro-inspired electric van.
VW Commercial Vehicles has temporarily paused U.S. sales of the 2026 model, citing “market conditions” and a challenging EV landscape. The company plans to clear existing 2025 inventory before introducing the 2027 model, which could bring significant changes.
Overall EV Sales Rise for Volkswagen
The ID. Buzz’s success contributed to a more than doubling of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ overall electric vehicle sales, which increased by 118.9% to 65,900 units in 2025. EVs now represent 16.4% of the brand’s total shipments, although overall deliveries declined slightly by 2.1% to 401,000 units.
The Bigger Picture
The ID. Buzz’s performance highlights the varying success of electric vehicles in different markets. While challenges remain in the U.S. due to pricing, range concerns, and evolving tax incentives, the van is clearly resonating with buyers elsewhere. The decision to pause the 2026 model in the U.S. suggests Volkswagen is strategically adjusting its approach to ensure the ID. Buzz’s long-term viability in a competitive EV market.
The 2027 model is expected to address some of these issues, potentially offering a more accessible price point and improved range. Whether it will succeed in making the ID. Buzz a true “people’s car” remains to be seen.
