Kia EV9 GT 2026: Performance with a Practical Twist

5

The 2026 Kia EV9 GT is a high-performance variant of the all-electric EV9 SUV, boasting 501 horsepower and a sporty driving experience. While it adds a dynamic edge to the range, the standard EV9 remains the more sensible choice for most buyers.

What Sets the GT Apart?

The EV9 GT distinguishes itself with its increased power output, firmer suspension, and aggressive styling cues. This includes unique 21-inch wheels, neon green brake calipers, and a sportier interior trim. Despite these enhancements, it doesn’t quite deliver the visceral acceleration expected of a 500-horsepower vehicle, largely due to its substantial 2,718 kg weight.

The GT includes selectable driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, GT), with the GT mode optimizing performance by maximizing motor response and torque distribution. Although handling is impressive for its size, the ride quality is noticeably firmer than the standard EV9, potentially making it less comfortable for daily use.

Performance and Efficiency Trade-offs

Kia claims a 0-62 mph time of 4.6 seconds, but real-world acceleration feels restrained due to the car’s weight. The all-wheel-drive system with Electronic Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control (eDTVC) and an electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) ensures stable handling, even in adverse conditions.

However, the trade-off for this performance is reduced range. While Kia estimates 316 miles, aggressive driving can easily deplete the 99.8 kWh battery, resulting in 200 miles or less. Charging times remain competitive, with DC fast charging capable of adding significant range in under 30 minutes.

Practicality and Interior Features

Despite the performance focus, the EV9 GT retains the practicality of the standard model. It offers six or seven seats, with ample space for passengers and cargo. The interior features high-quality materials, comfortable seats, and a user-friendly dashboard layout with intuitive controls.

The GT adds unique styling touches, such as neon green accents and sportier seat upholstery. However, the Virtual Gear Shift function feels gimmicky and doesn’t enhance the driving experience.

The Verdict

The Kia EV9 GT is a fun and capable electric SUV, but its high price tag (£82,235 and up) and compromised ride quality make it a niche product. The standard EV9 offers a better balance of practicality, comfort, and value. The GT caters to buyers who prioritize performance over all else, but most customers will find the regular EV9 more sensible.
