Land Rover has officially confirmed that its long-anticipated compact Defender model is well underway in development, with plans for an all-electric powertrain and a focus on maintaining the brand’s core off-road capabilities. The vehicle is intended to expand the Defender lineup into a full-fledged sub-brand, positioning it as a premium lifestyle offering alongside the existing full-size models.
Expanding the Defender Family
Land Rover’s brand director, Mark Cameron, stated that the development of the smaller Defender is “well advanced.” This new model will be the second in a growing Defender range, mirroring Range Rover’s strategy of offering distinct vehicles under a single, recognizable brand. The goal is to establish Defender as a luxury lifestyle brand with a portfolio extending beyond the current offerings.
Electric Powertrain and Capabilities
The compact Defender is expected to utilize Jaguar Land Rover’s Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, meaning it will be fully electric. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup is anticipated, providing substantial performance while minimizing environmental impact. While specifics are still under wraps, the vehicle is projected to be approximately 177 inches long – slightly larger than a Ford Bronco Sport and comparable in size to Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming baby G-Class.
Despite its smaller footprint and electric nature, Land Rover emphasizes that the compact Defender will retain the brand’s DNA. Cameron insists on preserving the rugged capabilities that define the Defender name, ensuring it doesn’t simply become another generic SUV.
