Leapmotor A05: New EV Signals Price Cuts for LiDAR Tech

16

Leapmotor has just filed official details for its upcoming A05 electric vehicle with Chinese regulators, signaling a move towards more affordable LiDAR-equipped EVs. The A05 is positioned as an entry-level compact model, slotting beneath the existing Leapmotor A10 in the company’s growing lineup.

Design and Dimensions

The A05 borrows styling cues from the A10, but with subtle changes to the front end. The car measures 4200mm long, 1800mm wide, and 1560mm high, with a wheelbase of 2605mm. It features a track width of 1525mm at both the front and rear, and rides on 205/55 R16 tires. Approach and departure angles are 14 and 24 degrees respectively, with overhangs of 845mm (front) and 750mm (rear).

Powertrain Options

The Leapmotor A05 will be powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (TZ180QY057) from Huzhou Leap Power Technology. Power output will be available in two variants: 70kW (94 hp) or 90kW (121 hp). The battery will be a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit, sourced from either Leapmotor’s Leap Energy, Gotion High-tech, or Zernergy, with final assembly handled by Leap Energy.

Customization and Cost Reduction

Leapmotor is offering extensive customization options for the A05, including LiDAR integration, front cameras, mirror-integrated cameras, varied fender trim, bumper cameras, two-tone paint finishes, and different wheel designs. These options suggest a focus on offering features at lower price points. The A05’s naming convention implies it will be priced below the A10 (internally known as B03X), which already holds the title of the most affordable LiDAR-equipped vehicle on the market.

Market Implications

The introduction of the A05 is expected to drive down the cost of LiDAR technology in EVs further, making advanced driver-assistance features more accessible. Leapmotor has a target of selling one million vehicles by 2026 and is accelerating its release schedule with a focus on compact, cost-effective models. The A10 will now launch directly on March 26th instead of entering pre-sales, a move likely tied to the A05’s impending arrival.

Leapmotor’s strategy of offering LiDAR at lower price points could reshape the EV market, putting pressure on competitors to follow suit or risk falling behind in the race for affordability and advanced features.
