Nio ES9: China’s New Electric SUV Giant Set for Launch

Nio is preparing to launch its largest electric SUV yet, the ES9, with deliveries starting in June 2026. This vehicle is significant because it represents a push toward larger, more luxurious electric vehicles in the Chinese market—and potentially globally. The ES9 builds on the success of the ES8 but offers more space and advanced technology.

Size and Design

The ES9 measures 5365mm long, 2029mm wide, and 1870mm high, with a 3250mm wheelbase. This makes it comparable in size to the Cadillac Escalade, one of the largest electric SUVs currently available, though the ES9 has a longer wheelbase.

Visually, the ES9 follows Nio’s current design language. The front features sharp lines and split headlights, while the roof integrates the company’s signature “three horns” housing LiDAR sensors and cameras. Solid-state LiDAR sensors are also embedded in the front fenders for improved visibility. The rear features a full-width taillight and hidden wipers, maintaining a sleek profile.

Technology and Performance

The ES9 integrates Nio’s latest tech, including steer-by-wire, full active air suspension, and rear-wheel steering—features previously seen in their ET9 sedan. The vehicle boasts three LiDAR sensors, Nio’s Shenji NX9031 chip, and the Aquilla super-sensing system. A 900V high-voltage system powers the car, allowing for rapid charging and battery swapping.

Under the hood, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivers 520kW (697 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. This enables a top speed of 220km/h. The ES9 will be available with a 102kWh battery pack from CATL, offering a CLTC range of up to 620km. Nio’s battery swap technology will also be supported, allowing for a full charge in just three minutes.

Market Positioning and Future Plans

The ES9 is expected to start at around 500,000 yuan (approximately $72,630 USD), strategically priced to avoid cannibalizing sales of the existing ES8. Nio achieved profitability in the fourth quarter of last year, largely due to strong ES8 demand.

Nio is also preparing to launch the Onvo L80 crossover and refreshed versions of the ES7 and Onvo L90 in 2026, along with a high-power variant of the Firefly. This aggressive expansion underscores Nio’s commitment to becoming a major player in the electric vehicle market.

The ES9 launch is not just about one new SUV; it’s about Nio establishing itself as a leader in high-end EVs, with the technology and manufacturing capacity to compete globally.
