The Nissan Z sports car is getting a subtle but effective facelift just three years after its initial release. The updated model, known as the Fairlady Z in Japan, debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon, showcasing a revised front grille, a striking new exterior color, and performance enhancements. These changes are aimed at refining the already popular vehicle and keeping it competitive in the sports car segment.
Exterior Redesign: A Cleaner Front End
Nissan has addressed one of the more divisive design elements of the original Z: the large, single-piece grille. The updated model features a cleaner, two-piece design with slim horizontal accents and a more open lower grille, separated by a body-colored panel. This gives the car a less aggressive and more refined appearance.
Complementing the new grille is a beautiful new exterior color called Unryu Green, a modern interpretation of Nissan’s classic Grand Prix Green. The color is paired with new 19-inch 10-spoke wheels, further enhancing the car’s visual appeal.
Interior and Performance Upgrades
Inside, the changes are more subtle. The cabin now offers a light tan leather option, providing a warmer aesthetic. However, the most significant improvements are under the hood. The updated Z boasts retuned shocks with larger pistons, promising better handling and responsiveness. Larger brakes also improve stopping power, particularly on the Nismo model.
Notably, the Nismo version will also feature a manual transmission option, appealing to enthusiasts who prefer a more engaging driving experience. Some interior photos suggest the inclusion of paddle shifters alongside the manual transmission, potentially for rev-matching capabilities.
Market Availability and Outlook
The updated Nissan Z will first launch in Japan around summer 2026, with a likely US debut later in the same year as a 2027 model. While Nissan has not officially confirmed US availability, industry observers expect the refreshed Z to arrive stateside given the model’s popularity in North America.
The Nissan Z refresh demonstrates Nissan’s commitment to continuous improvement even for relatively new models. The design tweaks and performance enhancements are incremental but noticeable, and the Unryu Green paint option is particularly striking. If the US gets this update quickly, it will further solidify the Z’s position as a compelling sports car choice.
