Omoda Prepares to Challenge the Nissan Juke with New Compact SUV

19

The compact SUV market is set for fresh competition as Omoda unveils details of its upcoming Omoda 4. Debuted at the Beijing Auto Show, this new model is designed to sit at the base of the Omoda lineup, positioned below the Omoda 5, 7, and 9 models. While Omoda has yet to achieve the same level of market penetration in the UK as its sister brand, Jaecoo, the launch of the Omoda 4 represents a strategic move to capture the highly contested B-segment SUV market.

Hybrid Performance and Efficiency

The Omoda 4 will arrive in the UK later this year featuring the “full hybrid SHS-H” powertrain. This system, which has already been utilized in the Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7, is built around a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Key technical specifications include:
Electric Integration: A small electric motor paired with a 1.83kWh battery pack.
Transmission: A dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) that directs power to the front wheels.
Operational Logic: Similar to Toyota’s hybrid systems, the petrol engine is responsible for recharging the battery during operation.

While the system is not intended for extended electric-only driving, it offers a significant leap in fuel economy. For comparison, the Omoda 5’s hybrid setup delivers an estimated 52.2mpg, a substantial improvement over the 34.5mpg seen in its petrol-only counterpart.

Platform Versatility and Future Electric Options

The Omoda 4 shares the T1X platform with the Omoda 5, a decision that allows for greater manufacturing efficiency and shared componentry. This modular foundation also paves the way for a fully electric version—likely to be branded as the Omoda E4 —which will sit alongside the existing Omoda E5.

“Affordable Premium” vs. Budget Pricing

Despite being the entry-level model in the range, Omoda is avoiding a “race to the bottom” on pricing. While the Omoda 4 will be more affordable than the Omoda 5 (which starts at £25,915), the brand intends to maintain a specific market position.

“The Omoda 4 will not be so cheap, because I don’t think we just want to do the lowest-price product. This is not our philosophy,” stated Victor Zhang, Omoda’s UK Country Manager.

This approach aligns with the brand’s “affordable premium” philosophy. Rather than competing solely on the lowest sticker price, Omoda aims to provide high-end features and distinctive styling at a more accessible price point than traditional luxury brands.

Design and Interior Innovation

To differentiate itself from established rivals like the Nissan Juke, the Omoda 4 leans heavily into bold, aggressive aesthetics and tech-focused interiors:

  • Exterior: An angular, sharp design that draws visual inspiration from high-performance vehicles like the Lamborghini Urus.
  • The “Starship Cockpit”: An interior concept featuring a large central touchscreen and a fighter jet-inspired flip-up start button.
  • Lifestyle Integration: In a nod to modern consumer tech, the center console includes a dedicated docking station for a Nintendo Switch.

Conclusion

The Omoda 4 is a strategic attempt to penetrate the compact SUV segment by blending hybrid efficiency with high-concept design. By focusing on “affordable premium” rather than budget pricing, Omoda is positioning itself as a lifestyle-oriented challenger to established European and Japanese competitors.
