Peugeot is expanding its GTi performance division beyond the recently launched electric e-208 hot hatch, signaling a strategic shift to prioritize “great driving sensations” as a core brand identity. This move marks a revival of the iconic GTi badge, which last appeared on the 308 range-topper in 2017.
Electric Hot Hatch Competition
The e-208 GTi enters a growing segment of electric performance hatchbacks, directly competing with models like the Alpine A290 and a potential Volkswagen ID Polo GTI. With 278bhp, a 0-62mph acceleration of 5.7 seconds, and a mechanical limited-slip differential, the e-208 GTi aims to deliver a unique driving experience.
Future GTi Models Confirmed
According to Peugeot CEO Alain Favey, the e-208 is not an isolated case. The company intends to introduce more performance models under the GTi nameplate. When asked about the future of the badge, Favey stated, “We would not do it if we didn’t think that we want the GTi badge to continue existing in future. So definitely we will make sure that there is a future for GTI which goes beyond just that one.”
Leveraging Brand Heritage
The decision to revive GTi aligns with Peugeot’s broader effort to solidify its position as a brand focused on driving enjoyment. The GTi badge represents a significant part of Peugeot’s history and will be used to ensure future performance models stand out in their respective categories. Favey added, “The important thing is to make sure that wherever there is a GTI badge, you get an experience that is one of a kind and absolutely the top in the category.”
Next-Generation 308 a Likely Candidate
The next generation of the 308, slated for release around 2028, is considered a strong candidate for a GTi variant. Given the model’s recent performance heritage, Peugeot could once again challenge rivals like the VW Golf GTI and Cupra Leon.
Peugeot’s commitment to expanding the GTi lineup signals a renewed focus on performance-oriented vehicles, aiming to reassert the brand’s identity in a competitive automotive market.
