Polestar is upgrading its fleet, and while waiting for a replacement, we’re long-term testing the Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor – a model designed to maximize range and efficiency. The Swedish brand is also retrofitting older models with faster processors to enable better over-the-air updates, including improved steering wheel functionality and automatic mirror folding.
The Range Question: Over 400 Miles, But Does It Matter?
The Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor enters the market at under £70,000 with a claimed 438-mile range. This makes it the longest-range EV currently in the Auto Express fleet, prompting the question: is this excessive range actually necessary? As EV technology improves, with some models now exceeding 500 miles, it’s worth asking if these numbers are more about marketing than real-world utility.
For those with home charging, the argument for EVs strengthens. The tester expects a smart chargepoint (like Ohme) to optimize charging costs and availability. Without home charging, the EV case weakens significantly.
Performance vs. Efficiency: Why This Model?
While the Dual Motor version offers performance benefits and air suspension, the Long Range Single Motor prioritizes distance. The editor chose this variant to test whether 400+ miles on a single charge is enough to dispel EV range anxiety. Though slower (0-62mph in 7.5 seconds), the ~300bhp output should suffice for daily driving.
The car comes well-equipped, including a head-up display, heated seats, a panoramic roof, and comprehensive safety features. Options packages add over £12,000, allowing for a full evaluation of their value. The standard Magnesium paint is a cost-effective choice, avoiding the £1,000 premium for other colors.
Early Impressions and Quirks
Initial range estimates hover around 240 miles on an 80% charge, translating to approximately 300 miles fully charged. Longer trips should improve this figure. However, one peculiar design choice stands out: the key fob lacks a remote unlock button. The car unlocks automatically as you approach, which is inconvenient when someone returns for a forgotten item and requires either the key or the Polestar app to open.
Touchscreen-heavy controls also take getting used to, though essential settings are accessible via the bottom bar. The screen itself is high quality, but navigation can be cumbersome.
Verdict
The Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor offers a compelling combination of range and features. While some design choices are questionable, the potential for efficient, long-distance electric driving makes it a worthwhile test subject. Whether this range will truly quiet EV skeptics remains to be seen, but the car’s real-world performance will provide valuable insights over the next six months.
