Stellantis Recalls 44,000 UK Cars Over Fire Hazard

11

Stellantis is recalling 44,000 vehicles in the United Kingdom due to a design flaw that poses a fire risk. The recall affects cars manufactured between 2023 and 2026, across multiple brands, including Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Opel-Vauxhall and Peugeot. This is part of a larger global recall impacting approximately 700,000 vehicles worldwide.

The Issue: Water Infiltration and Fire Risk

The problem stems from insufficient clearance between a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) pipe and the starter-generator’s pole protection cap. When water enters the engine bay—a common occurrence in wet climates—it can cause electrical arcing, leading to overheating and, in severe cases, a fire. This issue affects vehicles equipped with a 1.2-liter mild-hybrid powertrain, a technology Stellantis uses in many of its current models.

The risk is not theoretical: the combination of water, electrical components, and heat creates a dangerous situation. Automakers are legally obligated to address these kinds of defects promptly, as failing to do so can result in severe consequences, including lawsuits and regulatory penalties.

The Fix: A Quick Dealer Visit

Stellantis UK states the repair takes roughly 30 minutes. Technicians will replace the pole protection cap on the starter-generator and verify the spacing between the GPF pipe and the cap. If the clearance is inadequate, the pipe will be repositioned or replaced.

Customers are being contacted directly by Stellantis to schedule appointments at their nearest dealerships. If you own a vehicle from the affected model years, contacting your dealer proactively is recommended.

Missing Models and Global Scale

While recall notices have been published for some brands (Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Vauxhall), reports suggest that Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep models are also part of the global action. This discrepancy raises questions about whether all affected owners are being notified equally and promptly.

“Having customer safety and satisfaction at the core of its values, Stellantis is voluntarily recalling 44,000 vehicles in the UK due to a potential issue concerning the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter (GPF) pipe and the belt starter generator (BSG).” – Stellantis UK

The recall highlights the increasing complexity of modern vehicle systems. Mild-hybrid engines, while more fuel-efficient, introduce new failure points, such as the electrical connections between the engine and the battery.

The scale of this recall—700,000 cars globally—demonstrates that even major manufacturers aren’t immune to design flaws. The incident underscores the importance of ongoing quality control and proactive safety measures in the automotive industry.
