Rare Porsche 928R Commissioned by Samsung Chairman to Auction for Half a Million Dollars

A unique Porsche 928R, commissioned in the 1980s by Lee Kun-Hee—the former chairman of the Samsung Group—is set to be auctioned by Gooding & Company at Amelia Island next month. This one-off vehicle represents a rare deviation from Ruf’s typical 911-based builds, offering a glimpse into the world of bespoke automotive commissions for the ultra-wealthy.

A Front-Engined Exception

Ruf Automobile, known for its high-performance Porsche 911 modifications, took an unusual approach with this project. Rather than starting with the rear-engined 911 platform, they began with a Porsche 928. The 928R was built around a bare body shell, then extensively modified to meet Kun-Hee’s specifications. This customization included performance upgrades and unique details that distinguish it from any standard 928 model.

Performance Upgrades and Refined Luxury

At the heart of the 928R lies a 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, reworked by Ruf to produce 360 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant increase over the stock 928’s 316 hp output. Unlike the more aggressive Ruf 911s, the 928R retains the grand touring character of the original 928, pairing the upgraded engine with a four-speed automatic transmission.

The car also features 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, upgraded brakes with carbon ceramic rotors, and a custom black paint finish. The interior is trimmed in a combination of black and wine-red leather, with premium amenities such as cruise control, an electric sunroof, and climate control.

Low Mileage and Collector Status

The 928R remained in Lee Kun-Hee’s private collection for years before being repurchased by Ruf and fully recommissioned. It has accumulated only 1,560 miles on the odometer, suggesting it was always intended as a collector’s item rather than a daily driver. Auction estimates place its value between $400,000 and $500,000, reflecting its rarity and provenance.

The vehicle will be sold complete with original documentation, tools, and accessories. Given its one-of-a-kind nature, it is unlikely to see extensive use; instead, it will likely reside in a high-end collection as a unique automotive artifact.

This Porsche is more than just a car; it’s a piece of automotive history tied to one of South Korea’s most influential figures. Its rarity and low mileage make it a highly desirable acquisition for serious collectors.
