Toyota’s high-performance GR Yaris hot hatch receives targeted updates for 2026, prioritizing a more intuitive driving experience rather than major mechanical changes. The latest revisions, driven by feedback from professional motorsport drivers, center on refined steering and enhanced grip, reinforcing the model’s rally-bred DNA.
Sharper Control: The New Steering Wheel
The most notable upgrade is a redesigned steering wheel, previewed in the GR Yaris Morizo RR prototype. It moves beyond superficial branding, replacing the Toyota emblem with the GR logo and reshaping the grips for freer movement during aggressive driving. Toyota engineers addressed concerns that drivers were accidentally activating switches during tight maneuvers by reducing wheel diameter and repositioning controls for independent operation. Illuminated buttons improve visibility at speed.
This isn’t just about looks: The steering wheel’s redesign reflects a deeper commitment to track-focused performance, where precision is paramount. Toyota recalibrated the electric power steering to work better with high-grip tires, broadening torque detection through adjusted torsion-bar rigidity and updated software.
Enhanced Grip: Bridgestone Potenza Race Tires
Higher-spec GR Yaris variants now feature Bridgestone Potenza Race tires on 18-inch BBS forged aluminum wheels. These tires were developed through rigorous testing to deliver consistent grip during extended high-performance driving.
Toyota claims the revised tread pattern, internal structure, and rubber compound significantly improve control at the limit, working in tandem with optimized damping characteristics in the front and rear shock absorbers.
Minor Updates: Comfort and Convenience
The 2026 update includes the option to pair heated seats and a heated steering wheel with the vertical parking brake when buyers select either the Navigation or Comfort Packages.
Mechanically, the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine remains unchanged, producing 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, utilizing an electronic multi-plate clutch and Torsen differentials, remains a key feature.
Pricing and Availability
The Toyota GR Yaris Type 26 is available for order in Japan, starting at $22,700 for the entry-level RC and reaching $36,900 for the fully equipped RZ High Performance with the Aero Performance Package. Toyota expects to roll out these updates to other markets soon.
The GR Yaris continues to evolve, building upon a history of motorsport-driven refinement that includes the 2022 GRMN Yaris, the 2024 facelift, and the 2025 Aero Performance Package. Toyota is also preparing to release the GR Yaris Morizo RR limited edition, featuring carbon fiber components and a special Morizo mode for the AWD system.
The ongoing refinement of the GR Yaris demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to delivering a truly engaging driving experience, making it a standout performer in the hot hatch segment.
