A highly sought-after Nissan Skyline NISMO 400R, one of just 44 ever produced, is going under the hammer at the Amelia Island auction on March 7th. Experts predict the vehicle will fetch over $1 million, solidifying its status as a blue-chip collectible in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) scene.
The R33 GT-R: An Overlooked Gem
The R33 Skyline GT-R often gets overshadowed by its predecessors and successors, the R32 and R34 respectively. However, the R33 remains a polished, capable machine with twin-turbo straight-six power and all-wheel-drive grip. The 400R elevates this platform to an extreme level, making it arguably the most desirable variant in the lineage.
From Le Mans to the Road
Nissan Motorsport (NISMO) developed the 400R following their 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans campaign. The race cars, while facing high attrition, demonstrated the R33’s potential on the endurance circuit. NISMO contracted specialist REINIK – known for their Group A racing engine work – to create a road-legal version infused with racing spirit.
A 400-Horsepower Rebellion
REINIK bored out the standard 2.6-liter inline-six to 2.8 liters, fitting forged internals, upgraded turbochargers, and setting the redline at 9,000 rpm. The result was a claimed 400 horsepower, defying Japan’s “gentleman’s agreement” of 276 horsepower. This engine made the 400R a performance standout, capable of reaching 186 mph.
A PlayStation Legend
The NISMO 400R gained additional fame as a dominant force in the original Gran Turismo video game. Its virtual performance made it iconic among gamers and car enthusiasts alike. The auction example, finished in Japan’s racing white, has just over 10,000 miles and was legally imported into the U.S. after spending time in Canada.
This car represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of Nissan’s motorsport history. Its limited production, racing pedigree, and cultural significance ensure its value will continue to rise. The 400R is not just an investment; it’s a thrilling machine deeply rooted in automotive and gaming culture.
