Volkswagen ID. Cross: The Future of Affordable Electric SUVs

15

Volkswagen is preparing to launch its new subcompact electric SUV, the ID. Cross, in Europe by fall 2026. The vehicle represents a strategic move by the German automaker to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing EV market—particularly in the popular B-segment SUV category. This model fills a critical gap in VW’s lineup, offering an affordable, practical electric option for consumers who want a compact vehicle without compromising on space or technology.

Key Specifications and Design

The ID. Cross is designed to be both compact externally and surprisingly spacious internally. At 163.4 inches long, 70.5 inches wide, and 62.2 inches tall, it closely mirrors the dimensions of the conventional T-Cross, but leverages the more efficient MEB+ platform. This allows for a 16.8 cubic-foot cargo area (slightly larger than the T-Cross) with an additional 0.8 cubic feet of storage in the frunk.

Inside, the ID. Cross features a modern, digital cabin with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. VW is even offering a “retro” dashboard layout inspired by the original Golf, catering to nostalgia while maintaining contemporary functionality.

Performance and Range

The ID. Cross will be available with three power outputs: 114 hp, 133 hp, and 208 hp, paired with either a 37-kWh or 52-kWh battery pack. The smaller LFP battery offers a range of approximately 196 miles, while the larger NMC battery extends this to up to 271 miles.

Charging is efficient, with DC fast charging capabilities reaching up to 105 kW (90 kW for the LFP version), allowing a 10-80% charge in 24-27 minutes. The vehicle also includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling users to power external devices with up to 3.6 kW of output.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The ID. Cross will be offered in three trim levels: Trend, Life, and Style, with pricing starting around €28,000 ($32,400 USD). The base Trend trim includes standard 90-kW DC fast charging, while the Life trim adds features like 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control. The top-spec Style trim boasts premium features such as matrix LED headlights, a front light bar, 3D taillights, and customizable interior options.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

VW is introducing a new generation of its Travel Assist system, dubbed “Connected Travel Assist,” which uses data from other vehicles to anticipate traffic signals and automatically apply the brakes when necessary. This highlights the company’s commitment to integrating advanced safety and convenience features into its electric vehicles.

The ID. Cross represents a significant step towards making electric mobility more accessible. By targeting the subcompact SUV segment—a high-volume market—Volkswagen aims to accelerate EV adoption among mainstream consumers. While the vehicle is unlikely to be sold in the U.S. for now, its European launch will set the stage for further expansion of VW’s electric lineup.
