Volvo has abruptly stopped selling its entry-level EX30 electric SUV in the United States, citing “shifting market conditions.” The decision follows similar moves by other automakers – Acura, Hyundai, and Kia among them – signaling a growing pullback from certain EV models in the US.
Short-Lived Presence
The EX30 launched globally in 2023, arriving in the US for the 2025 model year late in 2024. Despite its short time on the market, Volvo has halted US sales, citing financial factors alongside market changes. Dealers have until March 20, 2026, to submit final orders.
Broader Trend of EV Model Cuts
This move is part of a wider trend. Automakers are re-evaluating EV offerings amid slowing demand and increased competition. The US EV market, while growing, has not yet reached the mass adoption levels some predicted. This results in some manufacturers scaling back less profitable or slow-selling models.
Safety Recall Preceded Discontinuation
Notably, Volvo recently recalled over 40,000 EX30s due to a potential battery fire risk. The recall cited overheating issues in the model’s battery, a factor that may have contributed to the decision to discontinue US sales.
Electrification Strategy Unchanged
Volvo insists this decision does not represent a shift in its overall electrification goals. The company plans to continue offering other EV models, including the EX90 and the upcoming EX60, in the US. The EX30 will remain available in markets like Canada and Mexico.
“Volvo Cars’ commitment to electrification… remains unchanged,” the company stated.
Implications for US EV Market
The EX30’s rapid exit underscores the volatility of the US EV market. Consumer demand, evolving regulations, and safety concerns are all reshaping the industry. Automakers must adapt quickly or risk losing ground in this competitive landscape.
The discontinuation of the EX30 is a clear signal that not all EV models will survive in the long term. This is especially true for entry-level vehicles that struggle to compete on price or profitability.
