Xpeng Launches G6 EREV: Bridging EV Range Concerns with Extended-Range Option

Xpeng Motors has introduced a range-extender (EREV) version of its popular G6 coupe SUV, priced at $27,080 in China. This move addresses growing consumer demand for vehicles that eliminate range anxiety without relying solely on charging infrastructure. The G6 EREV combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine – acting only as a generator – with a powerful electric powertrain, offering a combined range of up to 1,704 km (approximately 1,062 miles).

Context: The Rise of Range Extenders in China

The launch comes at a critical time. Xpeng’s sales have declined by nearly 50% year-over-year in February 2026, while competitor Li Auto – which heavily focuses on EREVs – saw a slight increase. This shift signals a broader trend: Chinese consumers are increasingly favoring extended-range options that provide flexibility for long journeys or regions with limited charging access. The EREV format allows manufacturers to offer the benefits of both electric and combustion engines without the mechanical coupling, maximizing efficiency.

Powertrain and Charging Performance

The G6 EREV features a 218 kW electric motor, a 55.8 kWh LFP battery, and a 60-liter fuel tank. The gasoline engine provides auxiliary power, enabling the vehicle to travel up to 430 km (267 miles) on pure electric mode and extend that to 1,704 km (1,062 miles) with the range extender.

Key Performance Specs:

  • Pure EV Range: 430 km (CLTC)
  • Combined Range: 1,704 km (CLTC)
  • Fast Charging: Adds 314 km of range in just 12 minutes (under optimal conditions)
  • Fuel Consumption: 13.9 kWh/100 km

The vehicle’s 800V architecture enables ultra-fast charging, a competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving EV market.

Tech and Safety

The G6 EREV inherits Xpeng’s advanced AI and safety features, including the second-generation VLA system with 2,250 TOPS of computing power. Safety systems include automatic emergency braking (AEB) up to 130 km/h and high-speed stability control even during tire blowouts at speeds up to 180 km/h. The suspension system includes adaptive dampers and hydraulic bushings for enhanced ride comfort.

Market Strategy

Xpeng is positioning the G6 EREV to compete directly with rivals like Li Auto’s L6 and Deepal S07 in the under $29,000 segment. The company is offering limited-time incentives to boost early adoption. This move reflects a strategic pivot toward EREVs to address recent sales pressures and regain market share in the competitive Chinese NEV landscape.

The G6 EREV’s success will depend on whether it can effectively bridge the gap between pure EVs and traditional combustion vehicles, appealing to a broader customer base while maintaining Xpeng’s technological edge.
