The hunt led him to Texas in 1998. There, he purchased a 330 Super Stock car. The original owner had equipped it with a “four-on-the-floor” manual transmission. Young didn’t just keep it; he made it his own. He installed another four-speed gearbox, honoring the period-correct setup. But the engine bay needed work. The stock 383 cubic-inch small-block didn’t cut it.
He swapped in a Hemi.
This wasn’t a bolt-on job. It was a ground-up resurrection. Young sourced a block and cylinder heads directly from Chrysler. Yes, Chrysler still makes these parts. They manufacture them specifically to satisfy the enthusiast demand for authentic restoration components. It’s a direct line to the past.
The build doesn’t stop at the block. Young topped the Hemi with an aluminum intake manifold. It’s the correct style for the era. Then came the fuel delivery. Twin Holley carburetors were mounted to the intake. These are the same carburetors used on 1964 Super Stock drag cars. The result is a 330 Super Stock car that doesn’t just look the part. It breathes like one.
Most Super Stock examples rolled off the line with pound-parings aluminum fenders, front bumpers, and hoods. It was a cost-cutting measure that shaved weight. But Young isn’t trying to win a drag race. He’s trying to drive the thing. Aluminum dents. It dents easily. So he swapped the fragile metal for steel. Real steel. It adds a few pounds but keeps the car intact when you hit a pothole at speed.

To keep the stance right, Young lowered the right front shock tower. This isn’t just cosmetic. It tightens the geometry. He also installed a steel bell housing. The plastic ones crack. The steel ones hold up. A snakelike shifter follows. It’s precise. Direct. No flex.
