BMW’s 2027 X5: First Look at Interior and Powertrain Plans

3

BMW’s next-generation X5 (codenamed G65) is taking shape, and recent spy shots reveal key details about its interior, design language, and upcoming powertrain options. The 2027 model is set to launch next year with a broad range of drivetrain choices, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and even hydrogen fuel cell variants. The hydrogen model, however, will arrive later in 2028. High-performance X5 M and Alpina B7 versions are also planned for release by 2027.

Revolutionary Interior Design

The most significant change is the X5’s interior, which will feature BMW’s Panoramic iDrive – a pillar-to-pillar display replacing the traditional instrument cluster. This massive screen, first previewed in concept form, will span the width of the dashboard, offering a highly customizable interface. The display is divided into three sections: a driver-focused digital instrument cluster and two additional areas for widgets displaying information such as compass, weather, audio, navigation, and even performance metrics like G-force and real-time power output.

The prototype images show a rough version of the display, but the final product is expected to be more polished. The interior also includes a new two-tone steering wheel with haptic buttons that replace the traditional iDrive controller. The central display, though concealed in a bulky case, appears to have an angular design.

Next-Gen Infotainment and Powertrains

The infotainment system will run BMW’s Operating System X, designed for greater personalization. The Intelligent Personal Assistant will also be upgraded with Large Language Models, enabling more natural voice interactions. Door panels feature angled armrests, and minimalist switchgear is positioned near the armrest.

The 2027 X5 will ride on an updated CLAR platform incorporating elements of BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. The powertrain lineup will be diverse, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and electric options. Rumors suggest a range-extended iX5 REx variant with a combined range of approximately 621 miles (1,000 km) could also be offered.

Exterior Styling and Future Variants

The exterior design follows the Neue Klasse X Concept, featuring a reimagined grille and headlight treatment. The prototype also showcases a large lower intake and a four-tailpipe exhaust system, possibly indicating the high-performance X5 M60i variant.

BMW has remained tight-lipped about the upcoming model, but the combination of advanced interior technology, diverse powertrain options, and bold exterior styling suggests a significant step forward for the X5. The integration of Neue Klasse elements and the emphasis on personalization signal a future-oriented approach for BMW’s luxury crossover
