So why do stations do this?

Buried tanks are expensive. Digging them up involves heavy machinery, strict environmental rules, and constant monitoring. Why spend tens of thousands on a third tank when only a tiny fraction of drivers actually buy mid-grade?

Is blended fuel lower quality than pre-mixed gas?
You might worry. “If it’s mixed right there, is it dirty? Is it wrong?”
No.
Octane isn’t about power. It’s about knock resistance. That’s it. If your manual says 87, you get 87 knock resistance. If it says 89, the pump gives you exactly that resistance level by mixing the base fuels correctly.
Modern pumps are incredibly precise. State Weights and Measures agencies check them regularly. They test the volume. They check the octane rating. If the blend is off, the pump gets shut down and recalibrated.
So you aren’t getting “lesser” gas. You’re getting the exact specification you paid for. Just created dynamically instead of stored statically.
Why stations prefer two-tank systems
Think about the logistics. Regular and premium fly off the shelf. Mid-grade? Sluggish.
Stations need to keep regular and premium stocked. Always. If they kept a third tank for mid-grade, it might sit half-empty for months. Or overflow. It’s a supply chain headache.
Two tanks solve the problem. Keep the main sellers full. Blend the niche product when someone actually asks for it.
It saves money for the station owner. It keeps prices stable for you.
Does it matter that the 89 was made in your driveway? Probably not.
