The Hype vs The Rust

1

Sacred cows get slaughtered eventually. These aren’t lemons. Not exactly. They’re just cars wearing costumes the public decided to believe in. The reputation outpaces the reality. Sometimes significantly. We’re poking at the veneer. See what’s underneath?

The Land Rover Illusion

Everyone loves the Land Rover. The Series I is the grandfather of off-roading, sure. Noble. But ‘dual-purpose’? That’s where the myth cracks. You can put it on a farm. You can churn mud. But try the tarmac. Your spine will file a complaint. Teeth. Joints. Nerves. All screaming.

The leaf springs don’t forgive. The chassis girders rattle your teeth. Think of it as a tool for dirt. Keep it on the field. Put it on a road and you’re paying in pain. Is it impressive that it moves at all? Yes. Does it belong in a showroom? No.

The Bug’s Blind Spot

21 million sold. Sixty years of production. It’s a miracle. But let’s look closer. The people who revere it today would hate driving it. Really hate it. The rear-engine layout is unforgiving. Weight sits back. Handling leans. It doesn’t set a standard. It sets a trap.

By the mid-60s the Beetle was already ancient history masquerading as novelty. Flimsy. No safety gear. Brakes that laugh at you. People say “but it’s reliable.” Maybe they meant easy to fix? You could take it apart with a socket wrench and hope. Charm is real. But the Golf came along. It actually worked. The Bug just persisted.

The Rust Bucket with Wings

The MGB has an aura. Immune to analysis. Introduced in 62 it had a monocoque shell and power that felt real enough to ignore the misery. Sweaty cockpit. Heavy steering that fights back. Leaky hoods. Rust waiting in the seams. British sports car ownership meant sweating through it.

British Leyland stopped trying to replace it. Rivals dropped out. The MGB became the default option until 1980. It wasn’t the best. It was the last one standing. A living antique. Until the Mazda MX-5 showed up. Suddenly wind-in-the-hair driving made sense again. Actually fun. The MGB looked tired all at once. Did you really want that rust?

Buick Riviera

The list ends here for now. The Riviera?
