Suzuki’s Mixed Bag
Suzuki had some data. The Aerio carried 1918 lbs front and 1940 lbs rear in 2006 and 2007. The Forenza sat at 1918/1764.
The XL7 was heavier. 2590 lbs up front and 2921 lbs in back for 2007 and 2008. The SX4 listed 2050/1786 in 2007.
The Equator in 2009 had no data. Suzuki was leaving the US. They stopped caring about specs.
Toyota’s Dominance
Toyota listed more data than anyone else.
The Land Cruiser had a massive 3595 lbs front and 4220 lbs rear in 2006 and 2007. The Tundra in 2007 sat at 3900/3800.
The RAV4 fluctuated. 4430/4730 lbs in 2007. Then dropped to 2535/2435 in 2008 and 2009. That’s a huge swing. Did they change the chassis? Or was the 2007 data an error?
The 4Runner, Camry, Corolla, and Highlander had no data. Toyota assumes you don’t tow them.

Toyota was the only brand giving real numbers for heavy trucks. If you’re towing with a 2007 Tundra, you have a spec. If you’re towing a 2009 Camry, you’re on your own.
Why GAWR Matters for German Imports
We are finishing out the data dump with German engineering. Volkswagen and Volvo didn’t just build cars; they built heavy, precise machines. Knowing the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is not just about not blowing a tire. It is about understanding where the suspension meets reality.
For Volkswagen, the data is sparse. Most entries in the 2006–2009 window have no listed GAWR. This suggests the manufacturer either did not publish individual axle ratings for those trims or relied on the GVWR as the primary constraint for owners.
If you are modifying a GTI or a Touareg, assume the stock suspension is the limit unless you have specific aftermarket data.
The 2006–2009 VW lineup included the Golf, Jetta, Passat, Phaeton, Rabbit, and Touareg. For sedans like the Passat and Jetta, the lack of specific front/rear splits makes this a blind spot for those looking to tow or carry heavy loads. The Touareg 2 (2008–2009) also lacks published axle specifics in this dataset.
Volvo’s Axle Breakdown
Volvo provides a clearer picture for certain models. The XC90 and V70/XC70 variants have explicit limits. This is critical for anyone considering a towing setup or heavy cargo hauler.
2006–2007 Volvo Ratings
* XC90 : Front 2820 lbs / Rear 3150 lbs
* S80 (2006 only) : 2230 lbs / 2290 lbs
The XC90’s rear axle is rated significantly higher. This makes sense. SUVs put weight over the drive axle. The S80 is lighter. Front 2230, rear 2290. A tight spread.
2008–2009 Volvo Ratings
* XC90 : Front 2820 lbs / Rear 3150 lbs
* XC70 : Front 2800 lbs / Rear 2646 lbs
* V70 : Front 2690 lbs / Rear 2513 lbs
Note the shift in the XC70. Rear axle drops to 2646 lbs. The V70 is even lighter on the rear. If you are hauling snowmobiles or large cargo in a V70 wagon, you are pushing closer to the limit than in an XC90.
The Missing Data Problem
Why are so many entries blank?
1. Manufacturer policy. Some brands do not disclose GAWR in owner’s manuals for passenger cars.
2. Model variance. A base model Beetle may have different springs than a R32. The data here averages or omits these details.
3. Data source gaps. The original sources (Autopedia, Carlist, Ford glossaries) sometimes only captured the most common or highest-capacity variants.
Where to Find the Real Numbers
If you have a 2008 Touareg or a 2009 Routan, do not guess. Check the tire placard. It is usually on the driver’s door jamb. It lists the recommended cold tire pressure and often the GVWR. You can back-calculate approximate GAWR if you know the static weight distribution, but it is not exact.
For Volvo owners, the XC70 and V70 data is specific. Use it. If you exceed 2646 lbs on the rear axle of a 2009 XC70, you are risking suspension failure. It is not a theoretical limit.
