Californians Gunther Werks. They build monsters. Next week they hit Goodwood with a specific goal in mind. Beat the hill.
The car? A 993-generation Porsche 911. But not just any 993. It’s the F-26 project. Only twenty-six units exist, or will. That’s why the number sticks. Price tag? Around £1.2 million. A steep entry fee for this level of insanity.
Design wise it nods to the past. The 935 Slantnose. 1970s race cars inspired that sharp front end. Fighter jet aesthetics. Carbon bodywork wraps it up.
Then look at the engine.
A 4.0-liter flat-six. The Mezger engine. Traditionally air-cooled, despite what modern logic suggests. It’s twin-turbocharged now. Developed alongside a racing firm because naturally aspirated doesn’t cut it for these goals. Output is 1067 bhp.
More than the Ferrai 849 Testarossa. Think about that. A boxy old-school shape outrunning Ferrari’s newest hypercar on paper. Torque sits around 750 lb-ft.
It’s sent to the back wheels. Six-speed manual. Limited-slip differential. You drive it. No paddle shifters. No computers deciding your line for you.
Weight? 1225kg dry.
Less than a Lotus Emira. It feels almost too light given the power. You might worry it floats but the tires grip. Hard.
Who is driving it up that steep Sussex incline? Scott Speed. Ex-F1 driver. Nascar veteran. He knows speed.
The category? Production Road Car. That’s where things get tricky. The current king of that class at 2025 was the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut. Wait. The article says “Spear”. Likely a typo in the source but Koenigseggs dominate there. 47.14 seconds to climb 1.16 miles. Fast.
Can the Porsche do it? Maybe. Probably.
1067 horsepower fighting gravity. Will the air-cooled engine overheat on the ascent? Will the tires smoke? We don’t know.
Scott Speed will find out soon. The clock starts.
“Those outrageous reserves are sent… to the rear axle.”
It’s brutal physics. Simple. Violent.
If the Slantnose hits its marks, records break. If it fails, we see what 1000-plus horsepower does when it meets a brick wall of resistance.
The hill is
