Fast forward a century. Enter Yull Brown. The Australian inventor and Verne fan claimed to have solved the puzzle. He said he could separate hydrogen from oxygen in water using electricity. He called the result “Brown’s Gas.” Other names followed: HHO, hydroxy, oxyhydrogen. HHO is just shorthand for the H2O molecule. Two hydrogen atoms. One oxygen.

The legend of the water-powered car was born. For over thirty years, the debate has raged. Speculation. Argument. Refutation. Brown’s claims persist despite the lack of evidence. The water-powered car remains the mechanical equivalent of Sasquatch. Maybe it exists. Maybe it doesn’t. Faith drives the belief more than physics.

How HHO Systems Claim to Work

The theory is simple. The system uses your car’s alternator. It runs an electrical current through water. The water contains an electrolyte. Usually, this is salt. The electricity breaks the bond between hydrogen and oxygen molecules. The gases are released. They are collected. They enter the engine.

Manufacturers claim hydrogen is thousands of times more energy-dense than gasoline. They say you only need a little. The gas is piped to the intake manifold. The engine sucks it in. Combustion happens. The hydrogen and oxygen recombine. You guessed it. Water.

Why HHO Fails Physics

In 2007, the U.S. Department of Transportation released a report. It looked at hydrogen injection in commercial diesel vehicles. The report suggested hydrogen injection could increase mileage and reduce emissions.

Fringe energy theorists cheered. They saw validation. Clean energy advocates saw a victory. Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe. It seemed viable.

Brown and Verne were correct, to a point.

Electrolysis works. Most systems use a stack of steel plates. These act as positive and negative poles. The car’s alternator provides the current. With potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte, the current rips apart water molecules. The gas is pulled into the intake manifold by engine vacuum. Proponents say it improves fuel burn. They say it increases mileage. Or replaces fuel.

Physics disagrees.

The laws of thermodynamics are strict. It takes more energy to create the gas than you get back. The system’s output is less than its input. You are draining the battery. The alternator works harder. It draws more power from the engine.

This is dangerous. Tweaking the electronics can damage the engine. Incorrect air-fuel ratios cause knocking. Overheating. Catastrophic failure.

Emissions testing is another risk. If the system alters combustion, the car may fail. Fines cost more than the system itself. The savings you think you’re getting? They are illusions.

HHO systems are fascinating. They represent potential. They inspire tinkerers. Dreamers like to build quirky technology. There is a grain of truth in the concept of hydrogen enrichment. But does it actually work as a fuel source?

Probably not. The energy cost to generate the gas exceeds the energy returned. The alternator load negates any minor efficiency gains. The physics is clear.
