The question “How much horsepower are you running?” has been the standard greeting for fast cars for over a century. In the age of electric vehicles, though, that conversation is shifting to “How many kilowatts does that baby have?”
It feels like a technical leap, but the two units measure the same thing: power. Horsepower dates back to the 1700s, coined by steam engineer James Watt. His theory was that one horse could perform 33,000 foot-pounds of work in a minute. That translates to moving 1,000 pounds of coal 33 feet in that same minute. A 300-horsepower engine, theoretically, can do the work of 300 horses in that timeframe.
Most countries use horsepower for gasoline engines. Australia prefers kilowatts. Watt also gave us the watt and kilowatt, the standard for electrical power. A kilowatt is exactly 1,000 watts.
Decoding the Nissan LEAF’s 80 kW AC Motor
When Nissan described the LEAF as having an “80 kW AC synchronous motor,” they were describing the heart of the car. An AC motor runs on alternating current. This setup allows the car to recharge its batteries through regenerative braking. The motor, not the battery, drives the wheels. The battery pack in the LEAF is 24 kilowatt-hours.
The electric motor is simpler and mechanically more efficient than an internal combustion engine. But how does that 80 kW figure stack up against a gas engine?
Converting Kilowatts to Horsepower
To compare apples to apples, you need to convert. Multiply kilowatts by 1.34 to get horsepower.
80 kW x 1.34 = 107.2 horsepower.
So, the Nissan LEAF packs roughly 107 horsepower.
That number might sound modest for a five-door, five-passenger hatchback. But context matters. A similarly sized Nissan Versa gas engine produces roughly the same horsepower output.
Why does the LEAF feel different? Torque.
Gas engines build torque as RPMs rise. Electric motors deliver a flat torque curve. Power is available instantly from zero RPM. That constant, immediate force means the LEAF delivers brisk acceleration in city traffic, even if the peak horsepower number doesn’t scream “performance car.”
Is 107 hp enough? For daily driving, the instant torque makes it feel faster than the spec sheet suggests. The numbers are the same. The feel is not.
